Cross country: District preview

Class 4A-6

WHERE: Al Lopez Park

WHEN: Thursday, 5 p.m.

TEAMS: Alonso, Freedom, George Steinbrenner, Plant, Sickles, Tampa Bay Tech, Wharton, Wiregrass Ranch

OUTLOOK: The Plant girls are heavily favored and most likely will run in a pack to take yet another district title. Plant’s boys, who won Friday’s Hillsborough County championships, also appear favored, but should get pushed by Steinbrenner. Look for another great race for the boys’ individual title between Plant’s Jack Guyton and Sickles’ James Zentmeyer, who were neck and neck at the county championships.

Class 4A-7

WHERE: Newsome High

WHEN: Thursday, 5 p.m.

TEAMS: Bloomingdale, Durant, East Bay, Newsome, Plant City, Riverview, Strawberry Crest

OUTLOOK: Bloomingdale’s boys have made steady improvement through the season and Newsome’s boys and girls appear poised for solid runs into next week’s regionals.

Class 3A-9

WHERE: Pebble Creek Country Club

WHEN: Wednesday, 5 p.m.

TEAMS: Armwood, Blake, Brandon, Chamberlain, Gaither, Hillsborough, Jefferson, King, Lennard, Leto, Middleton, Robinson, Spoto

OUTLOOK: Chamberlain’s Maggie Parrish, Brandon’s Eliana Ochoa and King’s Sneha Sathish might end up a great race for the individual title. On the boys’ side, look for Middleton’s Daniel Dean and Robinson’s Jack Rogers to compete for the individual championship. Robinson and Chamberlain could get into a tight race for the girls’ team title, while Robinson’s boys are favored.

Class 2A-10

WHERE: Taylor Park, Largo

WHEN: Thursday, 8:15 a.m.

TEAMS: Anclote, Bayshore, Berkeley Prep, Holy Names, Jesuit, Tampa Catholic

OUTLOOK: Jesuit is deep and strong and should cruise into regionals. Academy of the Holy Names should do the same.

Class 1A-9

WHERE: Taylor Park, Largo

WHEN: Thursday, 9 a.m.

TEAMS: Academy at the Lakes, Bayshore Christian, Bishop McLaughlin, Calvary Christian, Cambridge, Carrollwood, Indian Rocks Christian, Seffner Christian, Tampa Bay HEAT, Tampa Prep

OUTLOOK: Seffner Christian and Cory Chambers should lead the Crusaders into regionals.
