River Ridge High boys basketball has had one of its best seasons in recent memory, thanks in part to 6-foot-9 senior center John Childs.
Childs has helped the Royal Knights move above .500 and into contention for a region tournament berth in Class 5A-District 8.
River Ridge is 9-8 and in third place in the district standings behind Tarpon Springs and Land O’ Lakes.
This season, Childs is averaging 14.2 points and 11.2 rebounds per game. He is also the leading shot blocker in the county (six per game) and also averages 3.6 assists.
AATL guard Haslem having solid season
Through the past three seasons, there’s been one consistent player opposing teams have had to watch out for when they’ve faced Academy at the Lakes: Ethan Haslam.
The 6-foot-3 junior combo guard is having another stellar season, averaging 22.8 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. What’s also impressive about Haslam’s season is his shooting percentage — 61 percent (99 of 163) — from the field.
So far, the Wildcats are 6-6 and have picked up wins against Pasco County counterparts Bishop McLaughlin (82-43) and Sunlake (99-93). AATL faces Gulf on Jan. 29.
Pasco recovering from early-season injuries
Despite losing four of its first six games, Pasco finds itself back on track in Class 5A-District 7 girls race with Brooksville Nature Coast, Brooksville Hernando and Brooksville Central all vying for the top two spots in the district.
An injury to top shooting guard Allahon Marbra slowed the Pirates early and led to blowout losses to Wiregrass Ranch, Land O’ Lakes and Gulf. In its past four games, Pasco is 3-1 and has defeated Gibbs, Zephyrhills and Anclote. The Pirates have crucial district games vs. Hernando tonight and at Nature Coast on Tuesday night.
Leading the way with Marbra out has been senior point guard Brianca Roberts, who is averaging 17.8 points, nearly four assists and three steals a game for the 12-7 Pirates. Also contributing is center Ashley Webster, who is scoring around 10 points a game and grabbing 12.5 boards.
