Tampa Chamberlain High's Mark Parrish was the top finisher Saturday in the 2009 Red Mule 5K Run at McKethan Lake.
Parrish ran a 15:57 to top Plant High's Bo Nelson who had a time of 16:21. Nelson just beat Land O' Lakes High's Matt Schwartz, who ran a personal record 16:22 time.
There were 298 finishers in the annual event, which is often a time trial and warmup for area high school cross country runners.
Winter Garden's Alyssa Burkert was the top female finisher with a time fo 18:34. Port Richey's Katherine Gerry was the top female master runner with a time of 24:29.
Brooksville's Dan French was the top male masters runner with a time of 18:04. French has won many area races despite problems with an irregular heart beat.
Parrish won the race with ease.
"I took the lead about 200 meters in,'' said Parrish. "I tried for a sub 15. I slowed down. This the first time I have run it. It's pretty fast. Nice pavement. I think everybody likes the course."
"He (Parrish) took off from the gun,'' said Nelson. "It's a good start for the season for me. I'm looking to get better."
