TAMPA — Carrollwood Day coach Lane McLaughlin said he expected Bradenton Christian to stack the box on defense Friday, so he had plans for a 300-yard day for senior quarterback Taylor King.
That plan went well for CDS’ offense as King passed for four first-half touchdowns, but fell short of the 300 yards as the Patriots cruised past their Class 2A-District 5 opponent.
King finished 5-of-7 passing for 236 yards, connecting three times for touchdowns with Mike Smith. Smith had a big day as well, contributing 136 yards on three receptions and returning an interception 81 yards for his fourth touchdown.
“Our offense has been firing all year,” Smith said. “We had a rough start to the season, but it’s been nice to see these guys come together, and you can see it on the field for sure.”
Bradenton Christian struggled to find a rhythm in the game, and the team’s confidence was further compromised when the Panthers lost running back Zach Cooper to an injury in the second quarter that sent him to the hospital and halted play for more than half an hour. McLaughlin reported that Cooper talked and moved his hands before departing by ambulance.
