ST. PETERSBURG — Carrollwood Day School shattered Canterbury’s unbeaten record and spoiled its homecoming Friday night.
This back-and-forth battle was won in the trenches, as Carrollwood Day controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. Canterbury kept itself in the game with the help of sophomore quarterback Josh Belton, as he completed 50 percent of his passes for 201 yards with two touchdowns.
A Belton interception early in the third quarter led to a Patriots field goal, and sophomore Dontell Green answered with a 75-yard kickoff return for a Crusaders touchdown. However, Carrollwood Day’s Elias Earley retaliated with a 70-yard kick return of his own.
With the combination of quarterback Taylor King, junior receiver Michael Smith and junior running back Willie Parker, the Patriots were able to keep the Crusaders’ defense guessing on every play. Parker had 205 yards on the ground and three touchdowns for Carrollwood Day.
In the final minutes, a 70-yard dash by Parker put the game out of reach for the Crusaders.
