The player and coach of the year in boys golf in Pasco County.
Player of the Year
Donnie Gabrelcik, Jr., Mitchell
Through most of the season, Gabrelcik played little factor in the outcome in the Mustangs’ wins. Sure, his score was low enough, but the team was so deep that as long as everyone had good rounds, they would win, and once again, go undefeated in the regular season. But it was late down the stretch Gabrelcik found his game and put up impressive scores playing as the team’s No. 3 seed. He would shoot a 3-under 69 at the Sunshine Athletic Conference tourney and then be the only one in the red with a 1-under 70 at the region tournament. It helped the Mustangs reach the state tournament, as a team for the first time in program history.
Coach of the Year
Rick Hyatt, Mitchell
Most will probably think, and even say, that Rick Hyatt has to do little work when it comes to coaching the Mitchell boys golf team. The team is loaded year in and year out and some of his golfers that don’t make the team’s top five could probably be another county team’s No. 1 golfer. But despite the string of SAC and district titles, one thing has eluded Hyatt: a team trip to states. This year, Hyatt balanced his golfers perfectly, including keeping his arguably best golfer at the No. 3 spot and guided the Mustangs to a sixth-place finish at their first state trip.
