Boys basketball: Anclote finally catches Bloomingdale

NEW PORT RICHEY - Anclote used the hustle and clutch plays of its bench to spark a come-from-behind win over Bloomingdale Thursday night at the William G. Hulton Ram Classic. For three quarters, the Sharks couldn't seem to close the gap on the Bulls, who led by as much as 10 in the first half thanks to the inside play of Ryan Bethoney (19 points, 6 rebounds). Still, the Sharks went into halftime down by only four. The third period also proved to frustrating for Anclote. After the Sharks closed the gap to one, the Bulls went on a 8-2 run to finish the third period up 44-37. Anclote used the hustle of Charlie Deorio (12 points) to make its move. Deorio scored consecutive baskets to pull the Sharks within a basket at 51-49. After a Bulls turnover, Sevy Galati's layup tied the game at 51 with just two minutes left.
The game then swung on a whistle. Anclote's Louis Perez was fouled and the Bulls player was also charged with a technical. Perez sank all four free throws to give the Sharks a lead they never relinguished. For Anclote head coach Jason Szymanski, the reason for the comeback was simple: hustle and energy. "We're a young team, and we have to learn to keep the energy throughout the game, not just in spurts." said Szymanski. "But the play of Deorio and Perez off the bench was huge. Charlie really proved himself tonight, and Perez hit some big shots for us."
