Boys soccer: Berkeley Prep tops CCC, 2-0
ST. PETERSBURG - Berkeley Prep used some strong offense in the first half and some strong defense in the second to beat Clearwater Central Catholic, 2-0 on Thursday at St. Petersburg Catholic. The win gave Berkeley Prep the Class 3A-10 district crown. As a result, Berkeley Prep will begin region play at home Thursday and CCC will be on the road in its region quarterfinal. Justin Vogel and Mark Biddinger each scored first-half goals off corner kicks from Auston Chen. CCC "came out with some intensity, but that goal shut them down a little bit," Vogel said of his goal which gave Berkeley Prep a 1-0 lead. "The kick came in and then jumped out, their keeper came out and missed the ball and I was able to capitalize on it."On Biddinger's goal, Chen used a throw-in toward the near post from the right side to set up Biddinger. "I just ran to the first post with it and it got past the goalie," Biddinger said. As good as the Buccaneers offense was early, the defense was equally big late. Jared Brazel made the play of the game defensively. With just less than four minutes left, CCC's Ryan Seidl got behind Berkeley Prep keeper Mikey Reintgen and looked to score when Brazel swooped in and knocked the ball away from Seidl just as he was gaining control of the ball.
