Girls district golf: Becker overcomes rough beginning

TAMPA — Steinbrenner’s Claire Becker started Tuesday’s Class 3A-District 11 golf tournament with bogey, double bogey and bogey, and on the fourth hole she almost hit her drive out of bounds.

“But I was determined to keep my mind in the game,” Becker said. “I was going to stay positive.”

Becker played the last 15 holes in 1 over par, finishing with a 5-over 77 at Heritage Harbor Country Club. Becker then defeated teammate Alyson Serino with a birdie on the third playoff hole for medalist honors.

Becker’s effort also helped the Warriors take the team title with a 323 total, 79 ahead of second-place Plant. Sickles was third with 470.

The district title is the second straight for Steinbrenner’s girls, who appear to be the favorites to take next week’s region championship, which the Warriors also won last year.

Steinbrenner’s Kelsey Holbert (83) and Brooke Deal (86) finished third and fourth overall.
