Following its 20-17 season-opening victory at Las Vegas Bishop Gorman on Friday, the Armwood High football team has risen to No. 1 in the national MaxPreps Freeman rankings.
The Freeman rankings utilize a computer program to determine a team's rank. It does not poll coaches, the media or fans. Essentially, the system uses a large number of game results stored in a database. Typically, the more a team wins, the higher the ranking. But the computer model also takes into account quality wins against other ranked opponents and strength of schedule.
Entering the Gorman game, Armwood was No. 8 in the Freeman rankings and Gorman was No. 11. In the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 poll, which compiles prep sports writers' votes, Armwood remained No. 2 behind idle Don Bosco Prep of New Jersey.
