Guard duo leads Anclote easily past Gulf, 81-61
HOLIDAY - Anclote's Brandon McWhorter and Chris Gregory have been one of the strongest duos in the Tampa Bay area and Tuesday night against Gulf, the two guards showed once again why they're a good tandem. The two players combined for 52 points and led the Sharks to an 81-61 shellacking of the Buccaneers. "Brandon is a senior and really stepped up tonight," Anclote coach Jason Szymanski said. "He's really coming into his own and he's a great captain, great leader of the team and he's been that way for the past three years. We've added some new pieces and I think we're starting to gel." The Sharks (5-0) have been rolling and through the first five games have picked up quality wins over Ridgewood (63-59), Pasco (59-51) and now Gulf. The Sharks came right out of the gates strong, as Gregory (24 points, four steals) scored five points in the opening quarter and McWhorter (28 points, five assists) also chipped in five in the period. Gulf (4-5) had a difficult time controlling the basketball on the offensive end, as the Buccaneers turned the ball over 11 times in the first half. Gulf freshman Keshaun Peters had a good showing in the first half, when the 6-foot-1 guard scored all of his five points, snatched three boards and also had two steals. Damion Hicks led the Buccaneers in scoring with 16 points and seven rebounds. Anclote was able to start pulling away in the third quarter, as the Sharks built up a 20-point lead after Drew Driscoll threw a perfect bounce pass to Shy Carter for a 56-36 lead with 43 seconds left in the period.
