5 Questions With Ashley McClain
Riverview senior pitcher/outfielder and two-year captain Ashley McClain, who has signed to play with Florida International, is 2-1 with a 1.11 ERA on the mound this season for the Sharks (4-2). A lefty, McClain also is batting .526 with 10 hits, four runs, five RBIs and three doubles. McClain was selected to The Tampa Tribune All-Hillsborough County second-team as a junior. Your district (Class 6A-8) is probably the most challenging one in Hillsborough County. What's it like going against the caliber of teams in your district every week? Our district is very tough but we just have to keep working hard because all of the teams in our district have good pitchers and good hitters. If we keep our focus and stay strong, eventually we'll come out on top. Riverview didn't make it out of the district tournament last year. How bad does the team want to advance to the region playoffs this year?We want to really bad. We had a good squad last year but with the returning players we have, we can do it. We are going to come out on top this time. How much potential do you think this year's team has? It has a lot of potential. We haven't shown our potential not quite yet, but in the end, you're going to see the real Riverview. Can you describe your pitching style? I don't really know how to describe it (laughing). Most people say it's different because I'm left-handed. I say it's unique. You said you want to major in physical therapy? Why? I really like messing with people who are hurt and I like the movement of the body. I sprained my ankle last year and ever since then I've been going to a therapist. It made me want to like it.
