Hillsborough Uses Speed, Finesse To Top Lakewood
TAMPA - Hillsborough High might have a reputation for smashmouth football but the Terriers used their speed and finesse to knock off Lakewood 30-18 in the preseason Kickoff Classic they hosted Friday at Chelo Huerta Field. In just its first two plays from scrimmage, Hillsborough literally sprinted to a 14-0 lead on a 92-yard pass play from junior quarterback Tarean Austin to receiver Charles Lovett and a 76-yard run by senior tailback Lindsey Lamar. Lakewood senior quarterback Jacquez Jenkins kept the Spartans in contention with some athleticism of his own, hooking up with receiver Bernard Reedy on a 66-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 14-7. But on its next possession, Hillsborough put together an 80-yard scoring drive, this one capped by a 1-yard quarterback sneak by Austin. Lakewood answered with a nine-play, 64-yard drive that produced a 32-yard field goal by Erick Cuoco. But on the kickoff that followed, Colby Walden, another one of the Terriers' track stars from last spring, bolted 99 yards for a touchdown to make it 27-10.Hillsborough substituted freely in the second half but kept several of its key starters, including Lamar, on the bench. Lamar, who is being recruited in both football and track, still wound up with 120 yards on eight carries. Austin, who did see duty in the final two quarters, had 240 yards passing on nine completions and no interceptions. "We showed flashes of brilliance and flashes of suicidal tendencies," Terriers coach Earl Garcia said. "Lakewood is not a team of slugs. We knew they had some very good athletes and were well-coached. We've just got to get better, labor on Labor Day, try to make fewer errors and get in better condition."
