TAMPA — Thousands took to the streets of Tampa for this morning's Publix Gasparilla Distance Classic's 15K and 5K races, running under overcast skies and relatively comfortable temperatures.
Babson Park's Jon Mott, who finished second last year in the 15K, cruised this year to victory in 48 minutes, 44 seconds, 20 seconds ahead of runner-up, Rafal Matuszczak of Poland.
Tampa's Sara Petrick won the women's 15K in 55:49, more than a minute ahead of the women's runner-up, Carly Thomas of Tallahassee.
Former Berkeley Prep runner Alex Main won the 5K race in 15:37, and Jess Butler took the women's 5K title in 17:04
Mott and Petrick will return Sunday for the Publix Gasparilla Half Marathon along with several of the United States top distance runners, who are vying for $40,000 in prize money and have Olympic qualifying standards hanging in the balance.
