Report: Bolts offer Stamkos 8-year, $68M deal

The Tampa Bay Lightning have submitted a formal contract offer to captain Steven Stamkos, according to a leading sports website.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman Friedman reported during the second intermission of Hockey Night in Canada that Tampa Bay made an eight-year offer worth $68 million which would carry an annual salary cap hit of $8.5 million, which is $1 million more per season than Stamkos makes in his current deal.

It is believed to be the first offer either side has made in the process to this point.

Stamkos is in the final year of a five-year deal signed following the end of the 2010-11 season and is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent.
