Lightning set to open camp Wednesday

TAMPA — The Lightning will open their first training camp under coach Jon Cooper on Wednesday when players report for physicals and testing.

The team will hit the ice for the first time Thursday, with 62 players divided among three groups for three practice sessions at the Forum in Tampa. Thursday’s practices at 9 a.m., 10:45 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. are open to the public, but Friday’s sessions are closed.

Fan Fest is at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Forum, featuring autograph sessions, concession and merchandise discounts and the start of single-game ticket sales at the box office.

The remainder of the camp schedule has not been released.

Tampa Bay opens the preseason against St. Louis on Sept. 18 at Amway Arena in Orlando, the first of four games on consecutive nights. They Lightning play Nashville at the Forum on Sept. 19, at St. Louis on Sept. 20 and against Florida at the Forum on Sept. 21.

Camp moves to the Germain Arena in Estero from Sept. 23-28. The Lightning play Florida at Germain Arena on Sept. 26 and end the preseason at Florida on Sept. 28.

The Lightning open the regular season at Boston on Oct. 3.

Rookie tournament results

The Lightning opened a three-game rookie tournament Friday with a 5-5 tie against the Boston Bruins at Saveology IcePlex in Coral Springs. Tanner Richard scored with 58 seconds left in regulation and the game remained tied after five rounds of the shootout. Former first-round pick Vladislav Namestnikov converted the only chance for Tampa Bay in the final round.

Adam Erne, the Lightning’s second-round pick in 2013, had a goal and two assists, while Nikita Kucherov had a goal and assist and Namestnikov a pair of assists. Danick Gauthier and Dan Milan also scored for Tampa Bay.

Goaltender Kristers Gudlevskis stopped 28 shots, playing the entire game.
