Gulf's Quarto resigns position
Gulf High girls basketball coach Mike Quarto resigned to pursue an administrative role. Quarto led the Buccaneers to a 28-3 record this past season and led Gulf to the postseason seven times since 2003. The veteran coach put together a 208-54 record and five district championships and Sunshine Athletic Conference titles. Quarto will remain an assistant football coach at the school. Baseball The Class 3A-Region 2 quarterfinal game between Bishop McLaughlin and Lakeland Christian was moved from Wednesday to Thursday at Lakeland Christian. Game time is 7 p.m. Volleyball Berkeley Prep's Sidney Brown was named to the prepvolleyball.com Soph 79 list, which names the top-79 players for the class of 2014. Brown, a 5-foot-11 outside hitter, had 346 kills for the state champion Buccaneers last season and was named to the Tribune's All-Hillsborough County first team. In addition to the top 79 sophomore players, the website also gave accolades to another 371 players, including Freedom's Kelly Schaller (Highest Honorable Mention) and Hannah Kaczmarek (Elite Honorable Mention), as well as Berkeley Prep's Addison Harden (Special Mention).
