Bears cut ex-Buc Roberto Aguayo, keep Connor Barth as kicker

The Bears reportedly cut former Bucs kicker Roberto Aguayo on Saturday in favor of another ex-Buc, Connor Barth, according to multiple reports.

The former Florida State standout had been claimed on waivers after being cut by the Bucs one game into the preseason. Chicago is now on the hook for Aguayo's guaranteed salary of $428,000, unless another team claims him. If unclaimed, Aguayo becomes a free agent.

Barth was let go by the Bucs, his second stint with the team, in May 2016 after they traded up to take Aguayo in the second round of the draft.

Aguayo attempted one field goal in three preseason games with the Bears, missing a 49-yarder wide right, and didn't do enough in games or practices to convince the Bears that his accuracy issues could be remedied.

The Bears also released former Giants receiver Victor Cruz, who failed to unseat starter Kendall Wright.

BRONCOS: Three-time Pro Bowl safety T.J. Ward was released with a year left on his contract. Also, quarterback Brock Osweiler will return on a one-year $775,000 deal as a backup, according to reports, after the Browns cut him. Cleveland still owes him $15.225 million.

COWBOYS: Defensive tackle Joey Ivie, a former Gator and Pasco High standout, was cut. Also, five-year veteran quarterback Kellen Moore was released as undrafted rookie Cooper Rush from Central Michigan earned the backup job. Rush had six touchdown passes without an interception during the preseason.

49erS: Receiver Louis Murphy, who played for Lakewood High, UF and the Bucs, was cut, as was QB Matt Barkley.

GIANTS: Quarterback Geno Smith made the roster as Eli Manning's backup, with former Buc Josh Johnson getting cut. Also, rookie Aldrick Rosas beat out ex-Buc Mike Nugent as the kicker.

JAGUARS: Former FSU receiver Rashad Greene went on injured reserve, and quarterbacks Blake Bortles, Chad Henne and Brandon Allen made the roster.

PANTHERS: Seventh-round pick Harrison Butker is apparently the choice at kicker, with team trying to trade former FSU standout Graham Gano.

VIKINGS: Former USF and Lakewood High standout receiver Rodney Adams made the roster.

WASHINGTON: Former Gator and Armwood standout running back Matt Jones was cut, as his agent had requested. He was benched after seven games last year.

QUICK HITS: The Patriots traded former Gators quarterback Jacoby Brissett to the Colts for receiver Phillip Dorsett. The Colts added QB depth even after activating starter Andrew Luck (shoulder surgery), and the team's official Web site seemed very excited about Brissett, saying he "is coming off perhaps one of the greatest preseason performances by a quarterback in NFL history (28-of-39 for 341 yards with four touchdowns and a rushing TD Thursday).'' The Patriots could use Dorsett, a former Hurricanes standout, to return punts with top returners Julian Edelman and Cyrus Jones out. … Dolphins safety T.J. McDonald, serving an eight-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy, signed a $24 million, four-year extension. … The Bills placed former USF linebacker Sam Barrington on injured reserve. … The Chiefs cut tight end Orson Charles, a former Plant High standout. … The Falcons cut former Florida running back Kelvin Taylor. … The Lions cut quarterback Brad Kaaya, a rookie out of Miami. … The Chiefs cut C.J. Spiller, leaving them with only rookie Kareem Hunt, Charcandrick West and fullback Anthony Sherman at running back. … Ravens QB Joe Flacco practiced for the first time since July. A back injury had sidelined him. ... The Steelers traded receiver Sammie Coates and a 2019 seventh-round pick to the Browns for a 2018 sixth-round pick. Coates, a third-round pick from Auburn in 2015, has struggled with injuries.
