Hoping to revitalize his fight career, former WBO heavyweight champion Shannon Briggs (51-6-1, 45 KOs) will headline tonight’s fight card at the DoubleTree Hotel Tampa Westshore in Tampa, returning to the ring for the first time since he lost a decision to heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko on Oct. 16, 2010.
Briggs’ opponent in the scheduled 10-rounder is Maurenzo Smith (12-8-3, 9 KOs) of Houston.
While Briggs, 42, hasn’t been in the ring in more than three years, he was recently in the spotlight when he appeared at the Hollywood, Fla., boxing gym where heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, Vitali’s brother, was training. After a few words, Briggs tore off his shirt and shouted at Klitschko, saying Briggs was “back” in the fight game and that Klitschko was just fighting “bums.” The outburst has more than 500,000 views on YouTube.
Also on the Alessi Promotions card are Tampa middleweight Ali Tareh (11-9-5, 5 KOs); St. Petersburg junior-middleweight Manny Woods (11-3-1, 4 KOs); Tampa featherweight Charlie Serrano (15-4-1, 4 KOs); and Thonotasassa super-bantamweight Ricky Tomlinson (1-0-2).
Tickets start at $25. The DoubleTree is at 4500 W. Cypress St.
