USF notes: Seven freshmen in line for early playing time
VERO BEACH - After getting a chance to watch film from the team's first fall scrimmage Saturday, University of South Florida coach Skip Holtz is getting a read on which freshmen will be able to contribute this season. Following Monday morning's workout at the Vero Beach Sports Village, Holtz named seven in line for playing time — CB Kenneth Durden, DT Elkino Watson, DE Antoine Pozniak, OLs Darrell Williams and Thor Jozwiak and WRs Ruben Gonzalez and Andre Davis. Each member of the group has drawn praise from Holtz and USF assistant coaches throughout camp. "All those guys may not be playing at a level to turn and get on the field today, but you've got to remember too they've had 10 days of practice. Everybody else has had, some of them, the fall and spring and then 10 days," Holtz said. "Just to evaluate where they are right now I think some of those guys are really ahead of the curve and have a chance to help this team." Sanchez backat linebackerJunior Armando Sanchez was back on the field Monday, sporting a new cast to protect his broken left hand and a new — but also old — jersey color as well. Sanchez, who had moved from linebacker to fullback in the spring to help the Bulls try to build depth at the position, has moved back to linebacker. "With a broken hand and where he is, and making the decision to redshirt all the freshmen at linebacker … it gave us the ability to turn and put him over there," said Holtz, who commended Sanchez for his team-first mentality in changing positions the first time. "I went and met with him and said, 'What would you rather be,' and he said 'Honestly, I feel more comfortable at linebacker.' " Injury report QB B.J. Daniels, who had been limited after suffering a left hamstring injury and was held out of Saturday's scrimmage, was a full participant in both practices Monday. … Among the projected starters who missed Monday's morning workout were OT Mark Popek (head), DT Cory Grissom (head) and CB Quenton Washington (illness). Other players vying for spots on USF's two-deep depth chart held out were OL Damien Edwards (shoulder), DT Demi Thompson (back) and CB Ernie Tabuteau (back). Edwards returned for the evening practice.
