TAMPA – Former Florida International University head coach and Ole Miss assistant Sergio Rouco, who has deep roots in Florida, was hired Wednesday by the University of South Florida as an assistant men’s basketball coach.
Rouco, 53, will make an annual salary of $185,000.
He joins Rod Strickland ($175,000), Oliver Antigua ($155,000) and director of basketball operations Jerry McCullough ($80,000) on the staff of Orlando Antigua, the former Kentucky assistant who replaced the fired Stan Heath.
Rouco was FIU’s head coach from 2004-09, going 55-94 before his firing. He also served two stints as an FIU assistant, while coaching high school teams at Miami Loyola and Miami Norland. For the past three seasons, he was Andy Kennedy’s top assistant at Ole Miss and he spent one season (2003-04) on the staff of UTEP’s NCAA tournament team.
“Sergio has over 25 years of coaching experience at the Division I level,’’ Orlando Antigua said. “He has great recruiting connections not just in the state of Florida, but around the world, which will greatly benefit the program.’’
