TAMPA — The Southeastern Conference men’s basketball tournament will return to the Forum in downtown Tampa in 2022. Scheduled dates are March 9-13.
“We are really glad to continue our relationship with the SEC,’’ Tampa Bay Sports Commission executive director Rob Higgins said after SEC commissioner Mike Slive made the announcement during the league’s spring meetings in Destin. “We have built a long history of hosting premier college basketball events and the SEC tournamnent will continue to enhance that.’’
Tampa hosted the SEC tournament in 2009 and the league has since added Missouri and Texas A&M to its membership. The only other time it was held in Florida was 1990 (Orlando). In 2008, Tampa also hosted the ACC men’s basketball tournament.
“Tampa is a great scene for us in terms of having an outstanding facility and environment,’’ Slive said.
Other college events headed to Tampa include the women’s Final Four (2015, Forum); the Frozen Four (2016, Forum); the college football national championship (2017, Raymond James Stadium) and the Division I men’s and women’s outdoor track and field preliminary championship (2018, USF).
