GAINESVILLE — Joker Phillips, who resigned Wednesday and was replaced as the Florida Gators’ receivers coach by former quarterback Chris Leak, was photographed in a restaurant with a recruit during an NCAA official dead period, according to a published report.
Yahoo Sports said the photo was turned over to the NCAA by someone with ties to the University of Miami.
If proven, the issue could be considered a major violation. There have been reports that Phillips violated the NCAA’s bump rule — running into a recruit by chance. But if the meeting was arranged, the penalties could be much more serious.
Phillips had said he was leaving for “personal reasons.’’
