No word on Bucs’ coach expected while Glazers attend NFL meetings

Not one member of the Glazer family that owns the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was on hand to help general manager Jason Licht officially usher former coach Lovie Smith out the door last week.

Several will want to be on hand for the official ushering in of Smith’s successor, however, which is why it’s unlikely the Bucs will name a new coach today or Wednesday.

While Licht remains holed up in his One Buc Place office, digging through résumés of potential head coach candidates, the Glazers are attending the NFL owners meetings in Houston.

And these are not just any old meetings. The NFL is expected to determine the fate of the three teams that have applied for relocation to Los Angeles (Oakland Raiders, San Diego Charges, St. Louis Rams).

With that issue taking precedence and demanding much of the attention of every owner in the league, it’s likely the Bucs will wait until at least Thursday, if not much later, to announce a new coach.
