TAMPA — There’s more to Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Lovie Smith’s personality than the soft-spoken, congenial side that is typically on display for the general public.
As it turns out, there is also a dry, comedic wise-guy side - and that was on full display Tuesday following the team’s first minicamp workout.
For example, in response to a question about his running backs, a group that includes 5-foot-9 Doug Martin, 5-8 Bobby Rainey and 5-7 Jeff Demps, Smith quipped, “I went into their meeting room the other day and asked if there was a requirement to be under 5-10 to be in this room.’’
Later, Smith was asked whether he had all the components necessary - including big, tough safeties – to successfully run the Tampa 2 defense.
“Talk about our two big safeties, I saw Mark Barron and Dashon Goldson walking down the hall today I thought they were getting ready to go into the linebacker room,’’ Smith said.
The ability to keep a team loose during a long season is a big part of being a successful coach. If these examples are any indication of how Smith talks to his players, he will not only keep them loose, he just might keep them in stitches, as well.
