Deckerhoff's 'You go, Joe' was unforgettable Bucs line

TAMPA - Joe Jurevicius and Gene Deckerhoff will forever share an audio link. When the longtime radio voice of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers peered through his binoculars and watched Jurevicius begin his 71-yard journey downfield in the 2003 NFC championship game, instinct took over. "You go, Joe. …You go, Joe," Deckerhoff bellowed on a frigid day at Philadelphia's Veterans Stadium, just before Jurevicius was knocked out of bounds, setting up a go-ahead touchdown. "I can still hear Gene in my head saying, 'You go, Joe,' " Bucs co-chairman Bryan Glazer said. "It's something that you never forget."
Deckerhoff, who also calls Florida State Seminoles games, said the call ranks among his most memorable sound bites in 24 years as Tampa Bay's play-by-play announcer. "There's 'Alstott up the gut,' 'Fire those cannons' and 'You go, Joe,' " Deckerhoff said. "You have to remember all the emotion surrounding Joe and what his family was going through at the time. When he started running down that sideline, the words just came out. That's a career highlight. … I won't forget that one." A decade later, Deckerhoff's call immediately transports Bucs broadcast manager Jeff Ryan back on the scene. "I still get chills when I hear Gene's words," Ryan said. No Tampa Bay player has had his exploits described more frequently by Deckerhoff than ex-Bucs linebacker Derrick Brooks, a standout at Florida State before entering the NFL in 1995. "I'm probably the only guy I can think of whose every play in college and the pros was called by Gene," Brooks said. "When he made that famous call, you can hear Gene Deckerhoff rooting for Joe Jurevicius. I know how personally Gene takes his job. He tries to bring the player beyond the moment, and that's exactly what he did that day with 'You go, Joe.' "
