TAMPA — The only two assistants to survive the Tampa Bay Buccaneers purge on the defensive side of the ball this past week were line coach Joe Cullen and linebackers coach Hardy Nickerson.
The Bucs want to leave their fate up to their new head coach and it seems they are sticking to that plan, at least for now.
Cullen has drawn some interest from the Chargers, who just extended coach Mike McCoy’s contract through the 2017 season, but the Bucs denied the Chargers’ request to interview Cullen, according to Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports.
Defensive line coach Don Johnson was one of six assistants McCoy dismissed before he signed his extension last week.
The Bucs finished the year tied for 14th in the league in sacks with 38, two more than they had a year ago, and their line was given a lot of the credit for the team’s 11th-place finish against the run in 2015.
