The Tampa Bay Buccaneers bolstered their safety position Wednesday by re-signing veteran Major Wright to their 53-man active roster.
The Bucs made room for Wright by placing injured running back Charles Sims (ankle surgery) on injured reserve-designated for return.
The return of Wright, whose release during the team’s final roster cutdown to 53 players came as a surprise, gives the Bucs five safeties.
The decision to place Sims on the IR-designated for return list means Sims must sit out at least six weeks of action, or 42 calendar days.
Each team is allowed to place one player per year on the IR-designated to return list. All other players placed on IR will be forced to sit out the remainder of the season.
