Bucs place CB Cox, P Johnson on injured reserve
TAMPA - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers put cornerback Torrie Cox and punter Dirk Johnson on injured reserve because of injuries sustained in Sunday's 20-17 loss to Atlanta, coach Raheem Morris said today. Cox, who played against three-receiver formations, has a hip injury and Johnson a torn hamstring. Receiver Michael Clayton, who injured his left knee early in the game and did not return, is day-to-day, Morris said. Johnson's injury occurred during a fake punt attempt on fourth-and-8 early in the fourth quarter. He was replaced by kicker Connor Barth, who had not punted since his senior year of high school. Barth made a 46-yard punt, which was returned 18 yards.Barth said although he punted well, his main expertise is kicking and he was not interested in punting again. The Bucs will audition punters for the final five games of the season. Matt Fodge worked out with the Bucs during rookie minicamp and is unsigned, making him a possibility. Cornerback Brandon Anderson will be promoted from the practice squad. Also, guard Arron Sears will be placed on the reserve non-football illness list. Sears returned to the team two weeks ago after a six-month absence for personal reasons.
