The gang’s all here (almost)
Like any NFL head coach, Lovie Smith approached reporting day with one thought in mind: No surprises.
While G Carl Nicks was missing with an excused absence, the rest of the Bucs showed up at the team facility Thursday morning as planned.
Not a holdout in sight.
“We know where everyone is,’’ Smith said. “I waited for the last guy to show up last night and everybody checked in, got a great night’s sleep and they’re here today.’’
Safeties Dashon Goldson (ankle) and Mark Barron (hamstring), who missed virtually the entire offseason nursing injuries, are expected on the field Friday afternoon for the initial workout of training camp.
Did you know?
Only 13 of Tampa Bay’s 22 starters from the 2013 season opener remain on the roster as training camp opens.
Quote of the day
“I don’t mind (the Tampa weather). Before I came down here, I was in Phoenix, running around in 112-degree heat. Dry heat’s worse.’’
— Rookie TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins.
By the numbers
2 — projected starters older than 30 (QB Josh McCown, 34, and WR Vincent Jackson, 31)
32 —players on the roster 6-foot-4 or taller
175 — pounds RB Jeff Demps weighs, the lightest Buc on the roster
On Sunday, the Bucs will carry on an annual tradition of hosting athletes from Special Olympics Florida at training camp. More than 80 athletes from Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, and Polk counties will watch a portion of the team’s afternoon practice at 3:30 p.m. and then take the field to enjoy football drills and fundamentals with Bucs players and coaches.
