The Sports Bookie

A sports blog by Bob D'Angelo

Panini previews Flawless basketball

It takes a lot of nerve and even more confidence to name a product Flawless, but Panini America is banking on the same buzz for 2013-14 Flawless basketball that it received in its debut last season.

Last year’s product came packaged in a metal briefcase-like configuration. This year’s version, which will be released on Sept. 17, will have 10 cards per pack in the same padded briefcase design. Two of the cards will be base, but will be slabbed and embedded with diamonds, emeralds and rubies.

The other eight will include six autographs and two jumbo prime memorabilia cards. And no card in the set will be numbered higher than 25.

In its news release, Panini noted that this year’s set would include on-card autograph of such stars as Allen Iverson, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Oscar Robertson, Chris Webber and Manu Ginobili.

Two other inserts to watch: Retired Numbers Autographs and Top of the Class autograph memorabilia cards.

The jumbo prime cards will include an assortment of rookies, current stars and legends from the past. Top of the Class cards will combine an autograph with a piece of memorabilia from some of the NBA’s biggest names. Judging from some of the samples Panini sent in its release, the patch memorabilia cards will contain some generous swatches.

It looks like an interesting set, but one in which a collector will need to bring a suitcase full of money to get the suitcase full of cards. Definitely a high-end set.
