ST. PETERSBURG – The final day before the All-Star Break began with news that RHP Jeremy Hellickson has been optioned to Double A Montgomery for the purpose of giving him work during the break.
Hellickson will start Monday for the Biscuits then start Sunday in Port Charlotte for Class A Charlotte. He said he will rejoin the Rays when they return from the first road trip of the second half.
This makes sense because Hellickson has made just one start since returning from the disabled list after missing more than the first three months of the season after having elbow surgery in late January. The last thing he needs is to not pitch.
Also, with one off day on the upcoming trip and an off day before they begin a six-game homestand with Boston and Milwaukee, the Rays will not need a fifth starter until July 29 when they play host to the Brewers.
Also this morning, LHP Jake McGee was reinstated from the paternity list.
With a win today the Rays will take the series against the visiting Blue Jays and carry some momentum into the four-day break.
David Price starts for the Rays amid rumors of an impending trade before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.
Noted knuckleballer R.A. Dickey starts for the Jays.
Here are the lineups:
Dickey RHP (7-8, 3.86)
Price LHP (4-8, 4.10)
