BALTIMORE – SS Yunel Escobar put his sore right shoulder to the test by making 40 throws at 90 feet this morning. He will also hit in the cage before today’s game with the Orioles.
All indications are the throwing went well.
Manager Joe Maddon said he would like a decision today on whether Escobar needs to go on the disabled list or whether he can return to the lineup soon.
Escobar will miss his fifth straight game since suffering the injury last Tuesday while making a throw during the eighth inning against the Pirates.
Ben Zobrist will play shortstop, as he has in each game during Escobar’s absence.
The Rays will try to win the series this afternoon during the finale of this four-game set with the Orioles.
Alex Cobb, looking for only his second win since returning from the disabled list May 22, will face Orioles righty Miguel Gonzalez.
Some interesting notes from Saturday’s 5-4 win: according to Elias, it was the first time in club history the Rays scored five runs and won despite no hits, runs or RBI from their three, four and five hitters.
It was also the 21st time this season the Rays went hitless with runners in scoring position and only the fourth time they have won such a game.
Here are the lineups:
Cobb RHP (2-6, 4.10)
Gonzalez RHP (4-5, 4.48)
