Four-star WR Nate Craig-Myers commits to Auburn

Listed among the nation’s top prospects at wide receiver, Tampa Catholic’s Nate Craig-Myers had narrowed his options to Auburn and North Carolina.

With the entire Tampa Catholic student body cheering him on, the four-star recruit announced his decision during a live ESPNU broadcast Wednesday morning.

Volleyball: Holy Names hires Praetorius as coach

Laura Praetorius has been named the head volleyball coach at Academy of the Holy Names, athletic director Kevin Vargas announced Wednesday.

Praetorius previously had been the volleyball coach at Steinbrenner High where she led the Warriors to three district titles in four seasons and two state semifinal appearances. She had an 80-31 overall record, including 15-11 this past season when Steinbrenner fell in the district semifinals.

“Laura has established herself as one of the more respected high school coaches in the Tampa Bay community,’’ Vargas said. “As impressive as her team’s accomplishments are, what led me to my decision was her genuine desire to lead our program. Throughout this process I was struck by her energy, passion, organization and ability to effectively communicate her short term and long-term goals for our program.’’

Volleyball: Marante named Tampa Prep coach

Danielle Marante has been named the head volleyball coach at Tampa Prep, athletic director Mike Flynn announced Monday.

“We are excited to have Danielle join our family,’’ Flynn said. “From her days as a player at Plant and The University of Tampa to her recent experiences as a coach, she has demonstrated that she possesses all of the traits necessary to help our volleyball players achieve their dreams.”

Marante comes to Tampa Prep from Berkeley Prep where she was the head boys volleyball coach and assistant girls coach.

Football: Plant, Plant City players make commitments

Two more members from Plant’s state region semifinal team have decided where they’ll play in college.

Plant senior linebacker Michael Murphy has committed to Columbia and senior defensive end Sean Kissel has committed to Yale, Plant coach Robert Weiner said.

Murphy had 57 tackles and two interceptions on defense and recorded 400 total yards with six touchdowns on offense this past season while Kissel had 44 tackles and three sacks.

Basketball: Tickets on sale for ARS Hoopfest in Tampa

Tickets for the ARS Rescue Rooter Networks National Hoopfest “Tampa vs. the Country”, hosted by Berkeley Prep Friday, January 22, and Saturday, January 23, are now on sale. Tickets can be purchased at Berkeley Prep, located at 4811 Kelly Road in Tampa, and tournament organizers will sell tickets Friday, January 22 in the lobby of The Doubletree located at 4500 West Cypress Street in Tampa between 10a.m.-2p.m. Anyone inquiring about tickets being sold at Berkeley Prep should call the school’s athletic Office at (813) 885-1673.

Tickets are $10 for Friday and $15 for Saturday.

“Tampa vs. the Country” is one of two events sponsored by ARS Rescue Rooter Networks which schedules the top teams from one city versus the best in America. The other event, the Penny Hardaway National Hoopfest, was held in Memphis, TN this past weekend.

Football: Armwood’s Blue picks Toledo

Armwood senior strong safety and linebacker Debarallo Blue has verbally committed to Toledo, Armwood coach Sean Callahan confirmed Tuesday.

Blue led the Hawks in sacks with 13, recorded 90 tackles, 15 for losses, and had one interception this past season for the Class 6A state runner-ups.

Armwood finished 15-1 this past season for the second straight year. Blue was selected to the Tribune’s All-Hillsborough County Defensive second-team following the season.

Prep volleyball: Randy Dagostino returns to coach Berkeley Prep girls

Randy Dagostino has returned to Berkeley Prep to coach the girls volleyball program, the school announced Tuesday morning.

Dagostino, a member of the Flordia High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame, stepped down as the girls coach in 2012 after 28 years at the helm and 15 state championships. After starting a boys volleyball program at the school, which won its first state title in 2014, Dagostino resigned from that position in 2014.

Dagostino replaces John Coup, Dagostino’s former assistant who took over the girls volleyball program when Dagostino first retired.
