After leading Bloomingdale to the Class 8A state title this past season, junior pitcher Lace Smith and head coach Mandy Schuerman are finalists for the Florida Dairy Farmers 2014 Miss Softball and Coach of the Year Awards.
Smith, the Tribune’s Softball Athlete of the Year, was named the Class 8A Player of the Year by Dairy Farmers Thursday while Schuerman, the Tribune’s Softball and Female Sports Coach of the Year, was named 8A Coach of the Year, making them finalists for the overall awards.
A University at Buffalo commit, Smith led Hillsborough County in strikeouts (293) and posted a 0.79 ERA with a 25-2 record while batting .350 with 23 RBI. Schuerman, in her first-year as head coach, guided the team to a 28-3 record and its first state championship since 1993.
Schuerman will be competing against another coach from Tampa Bay for Coach of the Year. Jody Moore of St. Petersburg Canterbury was named Class 2A Coach of the Year. Moore, who has led the Lady Crusaders for the last nine seasons, guided them to a 20-6 record, their second straight state championship and third title in the last four years this past season.
