Marc Topkin's takeaways from Tuesday's Rays-Yankees game

LHP Blake Snell bounced back to give the Rays another strong outing, limiting the damage to one run in a 25-pitch first then retiring 11 straight and 13 of 14 before allowing a leadoff single in the sixth to Brett Gardner, which led to what seemed a quick hook.

In response to questions, manager Kevin Cash has suggested several times the past two days the Rays will look more closely at the idea of pulling their starters earlier, especially before the third time through the lineup, and going to a strong pen. Kind of like what he did Tuesday.

Today is a huge start for RHP Chris Archer, for himself and the team. After raising concern in walking off the mound Sept. 2 due to forearm tightness, Archer insisted he felt good but just pitched badly in Boston. He needs a strong outing today to alleviate concerns of anything more serious.
