Indy Bump Day, Nextel All-Star Race On Tap
With the potential for numerous teams being left on the outside looking in at the Indianapolis 500, thanks to unification bringing together the best open-wheel drivers at Indy for the first time since 1995, Sunday's Bump Day could hold intrigue and suspense not seen in more than a decade.
Thirteen rookies, including Grand Prix of St. Petersburg winner Graham Rahal, are trying to make the 33-car starting grid, which would be the biggest rookie class to start in the race since 1997.
With starting spots 1-11 already determined, positions 12-33 will be on the line Saturday (4-6:30 p.m., ESPN2).
That sets the stage for Bump Day, which has renewed significance because of the number of entrants, as drivers have one last chance to knock the slowest qualifiers out of the field.
The final of four Indy 500 qualifying sessions, Bump Day has five hours of TV coverage (1-3:30 p.m., WFTS, Channel 28; 4-6:30 p.m., ESPN2).
The 92nd Indy 500 is May 25 (noon, WFTS, Channel 28).
•NASCAR's Sprint Cup All-Star Race is Saturday (7 p.m., Speed) at Lowe's Motor Speedway. The 100-lap, 150-mile non-points race, run in four 25-lap segments, has a purse of more than $3.3 million, with slightly more than $1 million going to the winner. Kevin Harvick is the defending champion. Jeff Gordon leads active drivers with three victories (1995, '97, 2001).
•Coming off a much-needed home win, the Storm (4-7) play their first game outside Florida in nearly six weeks Friday when they travel to Grand Rapids (7 p.m., no TV).
