SCHOLASTIC ACHIEVERS

FULL OF PROMISE: Ten high school juniors from Hillsborough County have been named Young Women of Promise by the Athena Society, an organization of Tampa Bay area professional women committed to promoting equality and opportunity for women. Among the winners recognized April 3 were Danielle Grams of Riverview High School, recipient of a $500 award to help advance her education. She is the daughter of Gary and Debra Helmick of Riverview. Grams plans to attend the University of Florida or Emory University to study nursing or public health and hopes to continue her education and become a doctor. She is president of the Best Buddies Club, an international organization that matches students with special needs with students who are intellectually challenged. She also is the clarinet section leader for the Riverview High band and a member of National Honor Society and the Science Club. Her physical challenges of hearing loss and a rare blood disorder have strengthened her desire to become a doctor.

SENIOR ON DEAN'S LIST: Cate Minichino of Riverview, a senior majoring in journalism in the School of Communication at American University, was named to the fall 2007 Dean's List.

NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS: The National Merit Scholarship Corp. announced the names of some 2,500 distinguished high school seniors who have won $2,500 scholarships.Tampa Preparatory School student Aaron C. Koch of Valrico and King High School student Neil J. Manimala of Valrico qualified for scholarships. Scholars may use their awards at any regionally accredited U.S. college or university.
