Work begins next week on Roy Jenkins Pool in Davis Islands
DAVIS ISLANDS - Construction on the landmark Roy Jenkins Pool is scheduled to begin next week. At 10 a.m. Wednesday, Mayor Bob Buckhorn will unveil a sign officially marking the start of renovations on the 85-year-old pool, located at 154 Columbia Dr. Pillar Construction Group will replace the pool’s piping and operating systems, the deck and the restrooms. The city also will renovate the historic building, according to a press release. The Davis Islands Civic Association voted last year to contribute $500,000 to the $2.25 million project.Construction is expected to be completed in April 2014. Once completed, the pool will be open every summer, the release states. Roy Jenkins Pool was built in 1928. The pool was closed in 2008 due to public health and safety concerns. Davis Islands residents have been working with the city ever since to get the pool renovated and reopened.
