TAMPA – For the 10th year running, the students in Forms IX and X (seventh and eighth grades) at St. John’s Episcopal Parish Day School have won the Regional Latin Forum, an entire decade of success at this level.
Teams across the Tampa Bay area competed on Saturday, Feb. 1, in categories including creative, which encompassed mosaics, painting, mapmaking and pottery; Olympika, the athletic division that included relay races, a 100-meter dash and disc throwing; and academic, with tests on mythology, customs and grammar. St. John’s won both the creative and academic categories and took second in the Olympika to come out on top overall for the day. The students now go on to the state Latin Forum in April.
The study of Latin at St. John’s begins in fifth grade.
The regional and state Latin Forums sponsored by the Florida Junior Classical League are one of the ways St. John’s students can test their knowledge in a fun, collegial environment.
