For a day, Davis Islands went to the dogs – and cats.
Tom and Nancy Newman hosted the first Islands Paws Party, with more than 160 human guests and more than a dozen canines and felines up for adoption from the Humane Society of Tampa.
The dogs included a collie mix, a Labrador mix and several Chihuahua mix puppies who were held by guests and volunteers. A cage served as a “display” area for several tabby kittens and black-and-white kittens.
When the eating, drinking, dancing, watching the sunset and bidding on auction items ended late into the evening on April 4, five animals had been adopted and $22,000 had been raised for homeless animals.
“Some other charities have had parties on the islands and I just love the Humane Society,” Nancy Newman said.
Humane Society Executive Director Sherry Silk said when the Newmans offered their waterfront home, “it was a fantastic way of introducing our homeless pets to the island.”
