SEFFNER – Congress created the Extension Service in 1914 to give land-grant universities an outlet for teaching citizens things the schools’ research teams discovered.
The University of Florida in Gainesville is a land-grant university, so every county in Florida has an extension facility affiliated with the university.
The Hillsborough County Extension is a cooperative venture of the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences and the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners.
It is located at 5339 County Road 579 and provides printed information, workshops and online and in-person demonstrations about Florida gardening, safe food handling, hurricane preparation, wildlife, pest management, agriculture, family and consumer sciences, 4-H youth development, trees and landscaping and professional horticulture.
The information and services it provides are free to individuals and institutions.
