Science students at Dale Mabry Elementary School in South Tampa celebrated Earth Day gathered around their new butterfly garden and caterpillar house, which was created by members of Boy Scout Troop 53.
The garden is a service project for Life Scout Morgan Jones, a Dale Mabry alumni who is working toward his Eagle rank in Boy Scouts. Jones also recruited classmates from Plant High to help build the caterpillar box and plant the garden.
South Tampa businesses donated to the project, including Very Rarely Garden Center, Bill Shields Roofing, Sunset Properties, Home Depot and Lowe’s. The project turned a patch of weeds into a garden of plants that will enable students to study the metamorphosis of butterflies.
Dale Mabry teacher Kathleen Farrell coordinated with Jones on the project for the school.
