Sun City Center tries for record-setting gathering of centenarians
SUN CITY CENTER - A group of folks with plenty of experience celebrating birthdays will soon gather for what could be a record-setting bash. The Sun City Chamber of Commerce, 1651 Sun City Center Plaza, will host the latest Centenarian Birthday Party on March 27 at 3 p.m. South Bay Hospital, which is organizing the event, hopes to break the world record for Largest Gathering of Centenarians. The current record of 28 was set in the United Kingdom during a 2009 tea party, said Natalia Diaz, marketing director for South Bay Hospital.“The state of Florida as a whole and Sun City Center specifically, as a 55-and-over retirement community, obviously has a high concentration of seniors,” Diaz said. “We thought that would give us a good chance of breaking the record.” So far, 17 seniors are scheduled to attend. The Centenarian Birthday Party in Sun City Center made its debut in 1992, and the most recent edition of the event took place in 2009. Organizers expect the party to come back strong after its three-year absence. In the past, the event has been attended by a mix of family members, distinguished community members and county officials. Diaz said South Bay has extended similar invitations to several Hillsborough leaders for this year’s one-hour program, which will feature live entertainment, a short bio of each honoree and, of course, cake. South Bay Hospital is still looking for South Shore residents 100 years and older — or people turning 100 in 2013 — to attend the party. For more information, call (813) 634-0172.
