Volunteers are sought for cleanup
Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful is recruiting volunteers, sponsors and partners to assist with removing litter and debris from area waterways on Sept. 21 as part of its annual Hillsborough River & Coastal Cleanup.
Data collected from the event – including the number and type of littered items, overall tonnage removed and amount of recyclable material diverted from each site – will be used to determine future needs and projects within the community.
Post cleanup, all volunteers are invited to attend the Rollin’ on the River Rally at Lowry Park. The celebration includes a free picnic lunch sponsored by HMSHost, live music, environmental education booths and exhibits, the River Rat Team Challenge and the Recycle Regatta.

ELAPP photo contest underway
Amateur and professional photographers are invited to unlock Hillsborough County’s natural treasures by participating in the 2014 Environmental Lands Acquisition and Protection Program’s Calendar Photo Contest highlighting the county’s ELAPP sites.
Email photographs to ELAPPphotocontest@HillsboroughCounty.org with the following information: the photographer’s full name and age; photographer’s email address and phone number; name of the ELAPP site where the photo was taken; a brief description of the photo or its GPS coordinates; and the concept behind or statement regarding the photo.
Prizes include a guided canoe tour at Cockroach Bay, guided bird tour and a guided nature walk at a county preserve; and more. Besides being included in the 2014 ELAPP Calendar, the top 12 photos could be featured at the County Center in downtown Tampa, posted on the county’s website and used in other Hillsborough County publications.
Qualifying photos will be posted on the county’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/HillsboroughFL through Oct. 4. The public is invited to participate by “liking” their favorites photos. The Facebook photo album will be updated weekly. A panel of judges from the Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department will select up to 20 percent of the top-voted photos for selection to the calendar in order to have the broadest representation from more than 60 ELAPP sites.
For additional information on contest rules, call (813) 672-7876, ext. 211.
