Local teen to represent U.S. in international dragon boat competition

High school senior Ben Hoover from MiraBay in Apollo Beqch has qualified to join Team USA for the 2013 World Dragon Boat Racing Championships to be held in Szeged, Hungary, on July 24. Teams from approximately 30 countries will converge on Szeged to race multiple classes and distances, all looking to bring home the gold. Hoover's home team, the MiraBay Leviathans, along with team captain Ed Norstrem, have been supportive throughout the qualification process. "We see Ben as a great example of what an athlete can accomplish through a positive attitude, hard work and dedication," said Norstrem. "Add those attributes with his commitment to dragon boat racing and that makes him a perfect representative of the MiraBay Dragon Boat Club on the United States team." Hoover qualified in his age class on May 3 based on his fitness scores and technique. He is also an accomplished canoeist and kayaker, having paddled 500 miles of the Yukon River through Canada and Alaska.
"Being a dragon boater means to be a part of something much larger than myself. It's about teamwork and cooperation with others," said Hoover. "I have been given an amazing opportunity and I feel honored to represent my country in the world championship races."
