Charity event aims to help Mary & Martha House
RUSKIN - From golf or fishing to running or walking, the third annual Hook 'n' Sink Charity event offers numerous ways to enjoying doing good. Sponsored by the Resort & Club at Little Harbor, the event — which supports the Mary & Martha House in Ruskin — runs March 22-24 at both the Resort & Club at Little Harbor in Ruskin and Club Renaissance Golf & Country Club in Sun City Center. The weekend starts with a free kickoff party for participants of any event and a mandatory captain's meeting March 22 at 7 p.m. at Little Harbor, where rules for the catch-and-release tournament will be presented. There will also be a silent auction of items, such as a signed Tampa Bay Bucs football; Disney, Sea World, Florida Aquarium, MOSI and Universal tickets; jewelry; weekend getaway; and gift baskets. The next morning, there are two events: the catch-and-release fishing tournament and, new this year, a 5k run/walk and 1-mile Fun Run for the kids. The cost is $25 if registered in advance, $30 the night before or at the 7:30 a.m. check-in. Children are free. "We are excited about bringing a family element to the event this year with the 5k run/walk," said Laurie Herring, program development manager. "It gives children the opportunity to help support the cause." For the fishermen, check-in is at 7 a.m., whether anglers bring their own boats, fish on a charter or from a pier. The cost for the tourney is $50 for adults, $25 per child 12 and younger. To close out the event, the golf tournament begins March 24 at Club Renaissance with an 11 a.m. check-in time and 1 p.m. shotgun start. The cost is $75 per person or $300 per foursome. Mary & Martha House is a nonprofit organization that provides emergency and transitional housing for homeless and abused women and their children. Hole sponsors, as well as sponsors for beverage carts and additional items, are still needed. All funds from the tournament go to support the emergency shelter and its families.
