THE RIDE: Four-door, four-passenger 2009 Volkswagen CC VR6 4Motion sports sedan.
DOWN THE ROAD: All new for 2009, this is one stylish coupe-looking car but with all the conveniences of a sedan. How impressive is it for a midsize premium car? Zero to 60 mph in a mere 6.6 seconds. Acceleration is remarkably smooth and swift with plenty of passing ability and terrific handling.
TECH & PERFORMANCE: The CC is equipped with a 3.5-liter DOHC V-6 engine, which develops 280 horsepower at 6200 rpm and 265 pounds-feet of torque at 2750 rpm. It is mated to the robust and dependable VW-exclusive 4Motion all-wheel drive. The 6-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission ensures smooth shifts. If you prefer to manually change gears, try the paddle shifters on the three-spoke steering wheel. A front MacPherson strut with triangular wishbones and a fully independent four-link suspension in the rear lend firmness to the ride. The suspension system also gets coil springs, shock absorbers and stabilizer bars. The electro-mechanical power steering is linear and accurate. Bringing the sprightly car to a standstill are generous 13.5-inch front vented and 12-inch rear solid disc brakes.
LOOK & FEEL: Chrome is king! Indeed, chrome accents are aplenty on the black exterior of the CC in places such as the crosshair strut grille, front and rear bumpers, rear and side body moldings and window frames. We had the opportunity to drive the CC with an eye-catching Cornsilk beige two-toned interior. The 12-way power front seats are well-appointed. White-on-black numerals on the analog instrument panel gauges are crystal clear in daylight or at dark. The Driver Information Center with compass, time and outside temperature is suitably located between the speedometer and tachometer. Brushed aluminum trim and chrome appointments convey a rich ambiance. The standard Dynaudio premium sound system delivers 600 watts of cabin-shaking musical power via 10 speakers.
SAFETY FIRST: Standard features include dual front and side airbags, side curtain airbag for both rows, three-point safety belts and head restraints for all, four-wheel antilock brakes, Electronic Stabilization Program with Brake Assist, Anti-Slip Regulation, Electronic Differential Lock, ultrasonic park distance control system, tire pressure monitoring system and daytime running lights.
OUT THE DOOR: $39,300, plus tax, tag, delivery and destination charges.

WHY DIG IT: If you are in the market for a coupe-like sedan that can be athletic and enjoyable with the right mix of ride and handling, the CC will fit the bill. It was a car long overdue from VW. The wait was worth it, we must say.
