G37 boasts sharp styling, invigorating performance
THE RIDE: Two-door, four-passenger 2008 Infiniti G37S Journey luxury mid-size sports coupe. DOWN THE ROAD: The rear-wheel-drive coupe, a sibling of the G35 but with a bigger engine and more horsepower, is quick on its feet while offering sharp styling and an invigorating performance. What I noticed immediately is the loud rumble of the engine as soon as I turned on the car with a push of the start button. The all-new G37 is athletic, enjoyable and composed, steering street corners and turns with assurance and poise. TECH & PERFORMANCE: A 3.7-liter V-6 engine pumps out a remarkable 330 horsepower at 7000 rpm and 270 pounds-feet of torque at 5200 rpm. It is mated to an electronically controlled 5-speed automatic transmission with manual capabilities. Switch to down-shift mode if you want to have some fun at the wheel. Leading the vehicle on the road is a precise speed-sensitive power steering system. Eighteen-inch aluminum alloy wheels sit on a steel unibody structure. A four-wheel independent suspension consisting of front and rear stabilizer bars keeps the car on course. LOOK & FEEL: Enhancing the smooth-flowing but muscular facade of the G37 are the Infiniti signature L-shaped bixenon headlights and tail lamps, double-arch chrome grille, dual chrome exhaust outlets and body-colored exterior mirrors and door handles. The cabin epitomizes opulence and sophistication as you slip into the exceptionally spacious eight-way power driver and front-passenger seats. Grip on the three-spoke leather steering wheel is unyielding. Leather trim complements the polished aluminum shifter knob and also is abundant on the center console and instrument and door panels. The classic Infiniti analog clock sits gracefully between the audio controls. The touch of violet on the tachometer, speedometer, audio controls and the 7-inch LCD screen is slightly offbeat but pleasing to the eye.SAFETY FIRST: Dual front and side airbags, side curtain for both rows, Vehicle Dynamic Control, traction control, four-wheel antilock brakes, Electronic Brake Distribution with Brake Assist, three-point seatbelts with pretensioners, front active-head restraints and front and rear crumple zones are some of the standard amenities. OUT THE DOOR: $35,000, plus tax, tag, delivery and destination charges. The $3,200 premium package, which includes a power moon roof, premium audio system, iPod capabilities, power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel and heated front seats and side view mirrors, is well worth it. WHY DIG IT: Infiniti has produced an awesome coupe, thanks to eye-catching design, incredible performance and generous luxury goodies. The G family should welcome this all-new G37 with open arms, as will potential buyers, we are sure.
