Cattle Barons’ Ball
Boots, jeans, fringe and hats were the style when more than 700 guests attended the 17th annual Cattle Barons’ Ball on Feb. 28 at the Forum in downtown Tampa.
The event, with the theme Bronco Bustin’ Bash, was chaired by Carmine and Kris LaCognata with Tod and Tara Leiweke as honorary chairs. Food stations featured crab cakes, lamb chops, brisket, salad and more. Silent and live auctions included trips to Santa Fe, N.M., Portugal, the Cayman Islands, Vail, Colo., and more. Country music star Josh Turner performed, and radio personalities Jack Harris and Steve Austin and WFTS news anchor Linda Hurtado served as emcees and roving reporters.
Harris praised founder Gloria Giunta, noting that she spends 30 to 40 hours a week as a volunteer year-round. The event netted about $1.1 million.
DeBartolo Family Foundation Gala
The folks at the DeBartolo Family Foundation pulled out all the stops converting a hangar at Peter O. Knight Airport on Davis Islands into an elegant venue for the 11th annual All Star Charity Gala on March 1. Flowing white drapes covered the venue’s metal walls, and a white carpet covered the floor, turning it into an intimate and cozy setting for the 700 guests. After cocktails, guests were invited to sit for dinner while trapeze artists performed their magic in the middle of the room.
As the first course of roasted petit quail was served, Bob Anderson crooned the classics, from Frank Sinatra to Barry Manilow. Comedian Jay Mohr then took over entertaining guests with humorous anecdotes about his life and family as guests dined on short ribs and jumbo sea scallops. Lisa DeBartolo greeted guests and thanked the sponsors. She was assisted by her 10-year-old nephew, Asher Chronister, in selecting the winners of a chance drawing. A live auction, featuring a Fourth of July trip to the DeBartolo ranch in Montana, a trip to France and a Super Bowl XLIX trip for two, raised more than $60,000 for the foundation.
